Fiber fineness is measured in microns (thousandths of a millimeter). Ultrafine alpaca wool is 26 to 28 microns. Fine merino wool is less than 21.5 microns and superfine merino wool is less than 19.5 microns. The smaller the number of microns, the smoother and finer the yarn. More quality is coarser and more durable.
The number of microns in the yarn fibers is important because the yarn can easily turn into something completely different from what you expect. How thin, soft or thick a piece of yarn is determines what we do with it. Therefore, we recommend softer padding for baby clothing such as Baby Merino and thicker padding for cushions and chair pants such as DROPS Snow.
